Important Event Updates - Freestyle Nationals, Wave Nationals & National Kite Foil Series

Published Tue 05 Jan 2021

As we turn the page into 2021 we have seen a number of Covid-19 outbreaks that has seen State Governments re-introduce border closures and quarantine requirements.

Kiteboarding Australia is committed to offering events Australia wide, ensuring we maintain a high level of Covid-19 safety and comply to government guidelines and regulations.

Freestyle and Wave Nationals

KA plans to continue with our Freestyle Nationals in Cotton Tree (28-31 January, 2021) & Wave Nationals in Torquay (5-8 February, 2021), despite the continual COVID -19 challenges.

In order to progress the growth of the sport, the Freestyle and Wave Event Series’ and provide value to our members, we intend to proceed with these events as planned.
We acknowledge and understand that with current border restrictions this will create challenges for some participants, however we hope you can understand our decision to proceed with these national events. Event planning in a Covid-19 environment is challenging to say the least, but KA is committed to running events where possible and feel that we are in a positive position to host two premier National Championship events.  Significant time and effort goes into running a Nationals competition and as has been seen time and time again, moving events does not protect us from being in the same or similar position down the track.  We understand this will be frustrating for some; however, appreciate your understanding in this current environment.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely in the lead up to these events and should circumstances change we will provide further updates as soon as reasonably possible.

National Kite Foil Series

It is with regret that KA advise the first stop of the National Kite Foil Series planned at Sail Melbourne has been cancelled due to a person who visited the Brighton Yacht Club testing positive to Covid-19.  As such the first stop will be postponed until the 20 & 21st of February at Sail Sandy.

Additionally, in order to provide a fair and equitable series in the wake of border closures, we are announcing an update to the series points calculation used to crown a Kite Foil Series Champion. The changes to the point calculation method are detailed below:

If there is a border closure within Australia that excludes 1 or more states from attending a series event, the total number of events that will count towards an individual’s total series score will reduce by 1. At no point will the series reduce to below 2 events contributing to an individual’s series score.

E.g. There is a 6-stop series, with 4 events counting towards the series score. Border closures mean that individuals can’t attend the Victorian event. Therefore the series becomes a 6-stop series with 3 events counting towards the series score.

We thank you all for your continual support and understanding as we continue to navigate the Covid-19 environment.  Stay Safe and happy Kiting.
