Important notification regarding insurance coverage

Published Thu 14 Dec 2023

Kiteboarding Australia membership offers schools, instructors, students, competitors and general members the best level of insurance coverage currently available in Australia. Our comprehensive public indemnity policy, together with the base level personal injury policy, serves to provide reassurance and protection when out on the water, both in Australian waters and worldwide (excluding the Americas).

However, it is essential that members are aware when they are insured under the Kiteboarding Australia policy, and when water-based activities fall outside of that policy.

Your membership provides coverage for recreational kiteboarding and wind winging, in addition to Kiteboarding Australia sanctioned competitions, events, training programmes and related activities. The policy (and thus your membership coverage) does not extend to non-Kiteboarding Australia sanctioned events, including events organised through sailing clubs or other water-based sporting bodies or clubs. This does not necessarily mean that there is no insurance coverage for non-Kiteboarding Australia sanctioned events, as the club or sporting body organising the event may have their own insurance coverage. In these situations, it is best to check with the relevant club directly.

All Kiteboarding Australia sanctioned events will appear on the Kiteboarding Australia website. We recommend that all Kiteboarding Australia members check the website here for a comprehensive list of Kiteboarding Australia sanctioned events, noting Kiteboarding Australia is actively working with event organisers across the country to sanction more events for our members.

Members participating in kiteboarding or wing foiling races run by sailing clubs should be reassured that we are currently communicating with Australian Sailing to expand Kiteboarding Australia sanctioned regattas. Sanctioning for competitive events requires detailed risk management strategies, emergency response procedures and in some situations negotiation to amend contractual indemnity clauses to ensure our insurance offering covers the event.

In the meantime, we recommend verifying with the hosting sailing club or Kiteboarding Australia directly if you have any concerns as to whether an event is sanctioned by Kiteboarding Australia.

So why are we telling you all this?
We want to ensure that our members know that we are advocating for them and that we are transparent in all that we do. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions regarding our insurance policy and or event coverage.
