Information on the upcoming Wave Nationals

Published Sun 18 Nov 2018

Over the last month you've probably noticed Kiteboarding Australia talking about the upcoming Wave Nationals and GKA event.

We thought you might be interested in finding out some more information about these events, so please read on:

The National Wave Titles is scheduled for the 7th - 10th of December, a four day window to ensure suitable conditions to complete the event. The Surf Coast in Victoria is an excellent wave venue and during December should have solid South to South West winds to make for ideal wave riding conditions. The wind often comes in the afternoon, so bring a surfboard with you to hunt down world famous waves at Winki Pop or Bells Beach in the morning, which are only a short drive from the event site.

There has been a lot of questions about the event format, so please be advised this is a wave riding event, not a strapless freestyle event.

The event will follow a Double Elimination heat format, with the judging criteria based on speed, power and flow of manoeuvres on the wave, which is specified in more detail in the official National Wave Series Rulebook which will be released this week.

Andre Cater has been appointed the head judge of this years Nationals competition. Andre has been involved with kiting and surf events over many years, he is a level 2 qualified Surfing Australia judge, who KA feels will bring a lot of experience and professionalism to this years event. We look forward to hosting Andre in Torquay.

There is a camping ground right next door to the event site which offers very affordable accommodation options for those traveling from interstate. For more information regarding these accommodation options please refer to the National Wave Titles Event Page on Facebook or the Kiteboarding Australia events page on our website.

KA are working closely with local business in Torquay to bring you a number of fun social gatherings and events throughout the competition window, the details of which will be released as the events gets closer.

Following the Nationals the GKA Kite-Surf World Cup runs from the 12th to the 16^th of December. KA are stoked to be giving the top 4 females and males a wildcard entry into the GKA event, and word on the street is there is some serious prize money up for grabs. It will be awesome to see the likes of James “Stormboy” Carew competing at his local break, not to mention the likes of Airton Cozzolino, Matchi Lopes and Keahi de Aboitiz battling out the world title on Australian soil.

Entry for the Wave Nationals is $90, which includes an event t-shirt and a water bottle thanks to CamelBak, (just trying to do our bit for the environment by cutting back on single use plastic everywhere we can)!

Registrations are open until the 26th of November, smack bang after the Merimbula Classic. So make sure you get in early, lock in some accommodation and book those flights for whats going to be a world class event.  Thankfully, it is right before the holiday season, so there are still plenty of cheap flights available.

See you in Torquay!
